College of Science Outreach

The purpose of the University of Idaho College of Science Outreach group was to
educate and excite students about science. As a member, my duties were to
learn the group's instructional modules, develop a compelling classroom
presence, and become equally comfortable teaching an audience of a few
hundred (including parents) as I was facilitating group-based learning inside
classrooms. We typically taught students ranging from ages 10 to 17.

As Vice President, I retained the previous duties and gained the responsibility for
teaching outreach members our lesson modules, acting as a leader and
supervisor of outreach instructors, and designing special lessons. For instance, I
designed a 40 minute lesson on chemicals and combustion.The lesson culminates
with the instructor conducting hydrogen balloon explosions with chemical salts
while asking students to recall what they learned about the 'fire triangle' before
explosions and the colors that different chemicals burn after. The goal was not
only to teach the basics of combustion and lab safety, but to excite students
about science.
Alternative Service Break (ASB):

I volunteered my time during my 2015 Spring Break to help the Ririe School
District in Southern Idaho. During this time, I worked as a teacher's aid for a 2nd
grade class wherein I taught children vocabulary and reading skills, oversaw
creative group work, and oversaw lunch and recess for primary school childre
